Frequently asked questions
Why does Fieldmiles ask for “Always” location access?
Fieldmiles records drives automatically, without you opening the app. To notice that a drive has started while your phone is in your pocket, it needs location access even when the app isn’t on screen.
- iPhone: Settings → Fieldmiles → Location → Always, and turn on Precise Location.
- Android: Settings → Apps → Fieldmiles → Permissions → Location → Allow all the time, and turn on Use precise location. Also allow Physical activity if asked.
Your location is used on your phone to build your trip log. It is not sent to Fieldmiles; we never see your trips.
How much battery does Fieldmiles use?
Fieldmiles uses your phone’s built-in motion and location services to recognize when you’re driving, and records the route while you drive. When you aren’t driving, it waits in the background and uses very little power.
Battery use depends on how much you drive and on your phone. If you notice heavy battery drain, email support@fieldmiles.com with your phone model and we’ll help.
Samsung and Android: how do I stop drives from being missed?
Some Android phones, especially Samsung, put background apps to sleep to save battery, which can stop Fieldmiles from noticing a drive. To keep tracking reliable:
- All Android phones: Settings → Apps → Fieldmiles → Battery → choose Unrestricted.
- Samsung: Settings → Battery → Background usage limits → Never sleeping apps → add Fieldmiles. Make sure Fieldmiles is not listed under Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps.
- Location: Confirm location is set to Allow all the time (see the question above).
Menu names vary a little between phone makers and Android versions.
How do I back up and restore my trips on a new phone?
Fieldmiles backs up your trips to your own cloud account. There is no Fieldmiles account to sign in to.
- iPhone: Your trips back up to iCloud. Make sure you’re signed in to iCloud and that iCloud is turned on for Fieldmiles (Settings → your name → iCloud). On your new iPhone, sign in with the same Apple Account, install Fieldmiles, and open it. Your trips restore from iCloud.
- Android: Your trips back up to your Google account. On your new phone, sign in with the same Google account, install Fieldmiles, and open it. Your trips restore from your Google account.
Backups stay with each platform, so trips don’t move between an iPhone and an Android phone.
How do I restore my Pro purchase?
Pro is tied to the Apple Account or Google account you bought it with. On a new or reset phone, sign in to the same store account, open Fieldmiles, go to Settings, and tap Restore Purchases.
Because there’s no Fieldmiles account, a purchase made on iPhone doesn’t carry over to Android, or the other way around.
To cancel a subscription or ask for a refund, use your store account: on iPhone, Settings → your name → Subscriptions; on Android, Google Play → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. Refunds are decided by Apple or Google.
How do I export my mileage for taxes?
With Pro, open Fieldmiles, choose the year or date range, and export a PDF or CSV. Exports include your business drives and apply the correct 2026 IRS rate to each drive by date (72.5¢ per mile before July 1, 76¢ from July 1; sources: IRS Notice 2026-10, IRS Announcement 2026-11 (Internal Revenue Bulletin 2026-29)). Share the file with your accountant or save it with your tax records.
Fieldmiles isn’t tax advice. Review your drives before you file and ask a tax professional what you can deduct.
How do I delete all my data?
In Fieldmiles, go to Settings and tap Delete All Data. This removes your trips from your phone and from your iCloud or Google backup. Deleting the app also removes the copy on your phone.
Fieldmiles has no servers holding your trips, so there’s nothing for us to delete on our side. Deleting your data doesn’t cancel a subscription; cancel that in your App Store or Google Play settings.
